Gossip and Socrates …

Gossip is some thing the whole world loves. But being called or described as a gossip monger is something we all loathe. So how do the sensible get out of this horrible. but lovable  past time?

.Here is the story of how the great Socrates suggested it be shunned. He suggested what is described as the Triple Filter Test . So when some one ran to him to tell him what he had just heard about Diogenes, Socrates asked him to first check whether what he was going to tell him, would pass the Triple Filter Test?
.
First Filter -Has one made absolutely sure that what one is about to tell is true? This is a Filter of Truthfulness .
.Second Filter – Is what is a about to be told any good? This is a Filter of Goodness.
.Third Filter – Is what is about to be told of any use? This is the filter of Utility.
.
So maybe if we could pause to make these small checks, we could end up eliminating our tendency to gossip!

KICK START Your DAY …

WAKE UP  SMILING  

Rise Happy and Respect the Day. And the day will respect you! Remember the ‘Attitude of Gratitude’! Smiling the minute you wake up sends positive signals to your brain reassuring it that all is well with your world. This will help you carry the mood the entire day.everything is alright. 

 SPEND COUPLE MINUTES STRETCHING

Stretch those arms, legs, neck, head and just about every muscle and sinew in your body.  Stretching is Natures way of arousing your energies lying deep down and dormant. See how your cat or dog stretch and learn from them.

DRINK WATER

This you must do even before that morning cup of coffee or tea. Water comes second only to oxygen for us. It helps metabolize the fat content in your body that makes you sluggish. It is nature’s appetite suppressant. Hallelujah to WATER!

SOOTHING MUSIC.

One of the greatest anti-depressants and stress busters. Turn up the volume and carry on with your morning rituals with it in the back ground.

Every once in a while make an idiot of your self by laughing out loud. This will set you free! By the way laughing out loud lowers BP and increases blood flow to the heart and oxidizes it too. 

GOALS FOR THE DAY

These should have been set the night before when you were trying to sleep. Review them and plan your Day. This will help organize your life for the day.

By the way you should have goals for the Day, Week and Month. Remember those NY Resolutions which you remember only when another NY comes along!

 BREAK FAST LIKE A KING

Have the Healthy Stuff like cereals, eggs, nuts, juices and the like. Concentrate on fiber, citrus fruits but add chocolate. These are anti depressants and make you healthy.     

FINALLY take the trouble to look at Yourself in the Mirror and PERK UP – SURE YOU AIN’T  THAT BAD!!!

And REMEMBER

These Things DO NOT TAKE ANY EXTRA TIME at all. TIME is the Most Valuable Thing each and every Morning because  No One Ever has Time for Any thing every Morning

In line with Desiderata …

The most beautiful thing in the world is to see your parents smiling. And to know you are the reason for their smile.

We need to teach our daughters to distinguish between – A man that flatters her and a man that complements her. A man who lusts her and a man who loves her. A man who spends money on her and a man who invests in her. A man who views her as property and a man who views her property. A man who believes he is a gift to women and a man who believes she is a gift to him. And then we need to teach our sons to be that kind of man.

 Our main purpose in life is to help others. So if we cannot help others, at least we should not hurt them. 

Worrying does not  empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength. Life always gives a second chance. – it is called tomorrow.

Some day everything will make perfect sense so now laugh at the confusion and smile thru the tears. Keep reminding your self that everything happens for a reason.

The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind. Dear Heart please stop getting involved in any and everything. Your job is to only pump blood.

Forget what hurt you in the past, but do not forget what it taught you. Lead with your heart and your life will follow.

Life is too short to stress your self about people who don’t deserve to be an issue in your life. Only trust those who can see the sorrow behind your smile; the love behind your anger and the reason behind your silence.

Do you know why people cheat and lie? Because it is easy to get forgiveness. 

ANGER is a Feeling that makes your mouth work faster than your Mind. Never put the key to your Happiness in some else’s pocket.

Today be thankful and know how rich you are! Your family is priceless! Your time is gold! Your health is wealth! And your savior is the greatest Treasure of all!

When I was five yrs old, my mom always said that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school they asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote happy. Q: What are the thumb rules for a layman to take care of his heart?
1. Diet  – Less Oil and Carbs. More Protein. 2. Exercise – At the least a Half  Hour Walk Five Days a week. Climb steps and Avoid lifts. 

Avoid sitting for more than half hour at a time. 3. Quit smoking  4. Control weight  5. Control Blood pressure and Sugar.

Q: Is eating non-veg food (fish) good for the heart?
 No

Q: It’s still a grave shock to hear that some apparently healthy person
gets a cardiac arrest. How do we understand it in perspective?
This is called silent attack; that is why we recommend everyone past the age of 30 to undergo routine health checkups.

Q: Are heart diseases hereditary?
Yes.

Q: What are the ways in which the heart is stressed? What practices do you suggest to de-stress?
Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection in everything in life.

Q: Is walking better than jogging or is more intensive exercise required to keep a healthy heart?
Walking is better than jogging, since jogging leads to early fatigue and injury to joints

Q: Can people with low blood pressure suffer heart diseases?
Extremely rare.

Q: Does cholesterol accumulate from an early age or only after30 years age?
Cholesterol accumulates from childhood.

Q: How do irregular eating habits affect the heart ?
You tend to eat junk food when habits are irregular and your body’s enzyme release for digestion gets confused.

Q: How can I control cholesterol content without using medicines?
Control diet, walk and eat walnut.

Q: Which is the best and worst food for the heart?
Fruits and vegetables are the best and oil is the worst.

Q: Which oil is better – groundnut, sunflower, olive?
All oils are bad.

Q: What is the routine checkup one should go through? Is there any specific test?
Routine blood test to ensure sugar, cholesterol is ok. Check BP, Treadmill test after an echo.

Q: What are the first aid steps to be taken on a heart attack?
Help the person into a sleeping position, place an aspirin tablet under the tongue with a sorbitrate tablet if available, and rush him to a coronary care unit, since the maximum casualty takes place within the first hour.

Q: How do you differentiate between pain caused by a heart attack and that caused due to gastric trouble?
Extremely difficult without ECG.

Q; What is the main cause of a steep increase in heart problems amongst youngsters? People of 30-40 yrs age have heart attacks and heart problems.                               Sedentary lifestyles, smoking, junk food, lack of exercise in a country where people are genetically three times more vulnerable for heart attacks than Europeans and Americans.

Q: Is it possible for a person to have BP outside the normal range of 120/80 and yet be perfectly healthy?
Yes.

Q: Marriages within close relatives can lead to heart problems for the child?
Yes, co-sanguinity leads to congenital abnormalities.

Q: Many of us have an irregular daily routine and many a times we stay late nights in office. Does this affect our heart? What precautions would you recommend?
When you are young, nature protects you against all these irregularities. As you grow older, Respect the biological clock.

Q: Will taking anti-hypertensive drugs cause other complications (short/long term)?
Yes, most drugs have side effects. However, modern anti-hypertensive drugs are extremely safe.

Q: Will consuming more coffee/tea lead to heart attacks?
No.

Q: Are asthma patients more prone to heart disease?
No.

Q: How would you define junk food?
Fried food like Kentucky , McDonalds , Samosas, even Masala Dosas.

Q: You mentioned that Indians are three times more vulnerable. What is the reason?Europeans and Americans also eat a lot of junk food?
Every race is vulnerable to some disease and unfortunately, Indians are vulnerable for the most expensive disease.

Q: Does consuming bananas help reduce hypertension?
No.

Q: Can a person help himself during a heart attack?
Yes. Lie down comfortably and put an aspirin tablet of any description under the tongue and ask someone to take you to the nearest coronary care unit without any delay. Do not wait for the ambulance.

Q: Do low white blood cells and low hemoglobin count lead to heart problems?
No. But it is ideal to have normal hemoglobin level to increase your exercise capacity.

Q: Sometimes, due to hectic schedule we are not able to exercise. So, does walking while doing daily chores at home or climbing the stairs in the house, work as a substitute for exercise?
Certainly. 

Avoid sitting continuously for more than half an hour continuously. Even the act of getting out of the chair and going to another chair helps.

Q: Is there a relation between heart problems and blood sugar?
Yes. A strong relationship. Diabetics are more vulnerable to heart attacks than non-diabetics.

Q: What are the things one needs to take care of after a heart operation?
Diet, exercise, drugs on time. Control cholesterol, BP, weight.

Q: Are people working on night shifts more vulnerable to heart disease when compared to day shift workers?
No.

Q: Does dispirin or similar headache pills increase the risk of heart attacks?
No.

Q: Why is the rate of heart attacks more in men than in women?
Nature protects women till the age of 45. Present Global census show that the Percentage of heart disease in women has increased more than in men.

Q: What are the modern anti-hypertensive drugs?
There are hundreds of drugs and your doctor will chose the right combination for your problem. My suggestion is to – Aoid the drugs  Go for walks. Diet to reduce weight. Change attitude and lifestyle.

Q: How can one keep the heart in a good condition?
Eat a healthy Diet. Avoid junk food. Exercise every day. Do not smoke. Go for health check ups – if you are 30, at least once in six months.

These Magical Three Word Sentences …

Civilization is based on thoughtfulness. The really cultured are always aware of consideration to others. They also care for quality and style and exhibit gentleness, sweetness, politeness and kindness in the family circle and also outside.

Anticipation is the Soul of Happiness. Everybody including wives and husbands like attention. Neglect any one and they will  and seek it elsewhere.

Avoid fault finding – in marriage too. Errors, mistakes even stupidity cannot be corrected by scolding or offensive action.

All charms are embellishments of manner, of method, of thought and even of feeling. These never fail to lend power and advantage to those that possess them. Charms enforce evenness of action and freedom from friction. They make you appear cool and free from embarrassment. And surprisingly when charm is strong, brain is strong.

Study and practice politeness as an art before the near and dear and before the high and low. Talk to the least of your fellow humans as if you believed them worthy of your attention. Become skilled in the art of etiquette and polished in good breeding.

Sympathy is a Quality of the Heart. Politeness is a Quality of the Mind and Muscles.

Polish is the fairest of all accomplishments. Try and become refined and polished, In private and in front of others. Want of careful conduct to yourself, is important.

Whether alone or in company, take exacting care to behave and speak with the best culture. Diction should be free from coarseness and slang. Private refinement enriches the character. Form the habit of observing yourself and note the faults that will lesson the respect others may have for you.

This here Post holds a diametrically opposite stance. Here follow our considered beliefs on this little researched subject -which most certainly does not depend upon jedi mind tricks!

Let it be stated at the very outset that personal magnetism or charisma,  is a synonym for self control. All persons who seem to be blessed with personal magnetism always retain mastery over themselves in all circumstances. This is their most distinguishing quality.

They seem to have perfect control over mind and body. They never wear their hearts on their sleeves. It seems that they are masters over themselves as well as over outside events.

Hence it follows that personal magnetism is directly dependent upon the amount of intelligent direction which the mind may give to the entire body – the physical, mental and nervous aspects. Moods and feelings will then appear as slaves and not as masters.

There are a large number of areas which need attention and this even includes what we eat since that affects the body no end.

Personal Magnetism is hence an essence, a quality,  an endowment that comes and goes at will. It is only influenced and controlled by one’s mind and moods. It may however be held within one self by accidental habits which preclude the leaking of one’s vital physical, mental and nervous energies.

Magnetism depends on our moods and feelings. These may control us or we may control them.

Personal magnetism is more or less fleeting in weak characters who lack control over self. One needs to give attention to one’s physical aspect, to ones mind and how it functions and to ones feelings which may be controlled or  be controlling.

Another aspect that needs to be given attention is one’s voice which may itself  attract or repel.

Note Disraeli’s observation that the surest index of character is the voice!

The Six Methods for Gaining Control over Men/Women …

This Post is one of the Posts aimed at Making Your Life a Success.

There was this  Lord Chesterfield whose letters are full of nuggets that have wide  appeal. Here is one such  – “Learning is acquired by reading books but the much more necessary learning, which is knowledge of the world, is acquired by reading men and studying their various facets. You have to look into people as well as at them and take the tune of the company around you.”

With that as the starting point. lets have a look at how we all,  men and women, resort to our most favorite method to influence others to help get our way or crudely put, how to use them.

There are some half dozen methods used by most folk to get their way. Here is a look at each.

At the bottom of the rung is Selfishness.

This may also include and cover the use of sex to get one’s way.  It is indeed the the quid pro quo thing. People use money, favors and even women or women use men to gain control.

Basic low level cheap stuff which sadly is much too rampant. Has been so since the beginning of time.

Slightly above comes the ‘Bullying’ method used to cudgel and brow beat. Here the guy uses ‘Accusation’ or ‘Challenge’ and even ‘Threatens’ one to get his or her way.

Crude and common place for the ‘bullying natures.

Then come the refined methods where guys use Generosity and Liberality and that laced with Politeness to captivate and charm.

These never fail to impress, attract and please.

Lots more refined and adroit than the above is the method of ‘Harmony’ used by the cleverer guys where they seem to be aligned with your views and values but ever so slowly and most subtly they gradually shift you to their own view point.

Then comes ‘Humor’. Like ‘Harmony’ this needs great finesse because Humor is never the telling of jokes or the dirty stuff.

Indeed, ‘Humor is seeing the ludicrous in the serious’.

And one should seldom resort to it until one is able to wholly master this subtle and sublime art of the Mark Twains of the world.

At the top of the pyramid are those emotions most commonly used consciously or unconsciously to get one’s way in this world. These are ‘Interest’, ‘Sympathy’ and ‘Kindness’.

All very easy to apply but sadly not that widely or commonly employed. They cost so little and gain  so much. More importantly they add value to life.

Did not the guy say, “If you want to gather honey, don’t kick over the beehive!.”

Look around and see the time of day in how these methods are being used here there and everywhere.

Only YOU Count – in Love, War and just about Every Thing

This is another post intended for the aspiring and those wanting to make a mark in the rough and tumble of life – both private and professional. 

Man or Woman, young or old, indeed who ever and what ever – most every one would give their right arm to have a great aura.

Well here are Three Rules and Four Tips – all guaranteed to give you genuine, deep and abiding ‘Presence’.

The Rules –

1. Always (but always) observe yourself and omit all faults of person.

2. Drive out every vestige of physical, mental and nervous restlessness.

3. Check all involuntary exhibition of feeling. Remember that faces which picture ones inner moods and passions, are weak. As the guy said, one should not wear ones heart on one’s sleeve.

Now the Four Tips.

1. Keep the mouth closed, teeth touching. Never open the mouth except to speak or eat!

2. Never speak unless you have something to say. Then speak purposefully.

3. Avoid touching a person or things.

4. Never look into a persons eyes unless you are speaking or mentally saying something to that person. When being addressed look towards that person but avoid looking into the person’s eyes.

Just follow these Simple Rules and Tips and see what you become to your associates and most importantly – to Yourself!

That Self Confidence Thing …

Wonderful discussing this Self Confidence thing over the phone in the middle of the night.

Set me thinking.

Most have it for no justifiable reason. Others, with all reasons for having it, remain plagued with Self Doubt. With an over powering desire to be passengers.

Then there are the run silent run deep types. They maintain a low profile but come out, when needed,  swinging. Others of this ilk, silently deliver the coup d’ grace!

From long experience as a passenger, allow me to say a thing or two.

This guy here has just about Every Thing. He has brains, knowledge, temperament and  self deprecating humor. Also presence and looks to boot! Most importantly he is, in his quiet way, a kind person.

But deeply ingrained is this Self Doubt.

Reminds me of Group Captain Leonard Cheshire, a double VC, who seeing the ‘A’ Bomb on Hiroshima – as Churchills representative – resigned from the Air Force and went on to found the Cheshire Homes, one of which is in Dehra Dun.

The guy was so innately modest that he at one time, geniunely did not know that he had  WAAF Driver – till she reminded him that she had to go for lunch even if he did not!

To return. Usually the back bencher types have more confidence than the showy variety. When their back is to the wall they come out, guns blazing and hold center stage, before retiring with the emergency attended, to their chosen low profile position.

This here guy is hardly shy. Rather, being sharp and a good judge of people, he is acclaimed as a bit of a consular in matters of heart and head.

So where in hell is the Achilles heel?

Maybe the guy’s backside is not on fire. Without that no one can go anywhere. So choose your poison and GO! There is just no other way.

As for me what gets me going is simply cursing, just about every little or big thing, long and hard. Leaves one with lots of balance and dash. Note that dear old George S Patton could go on cursing for over two minutes w/o any repetition!

More seriously what works for most persons is, funnily, Posture and Bearing. Believe me when I say, if one consciously maintains posture and bears oneself right, the confidence thing comes striding in.

At rock bottom, posture and bearing mean just two  things.

First is  the way the head is carried.  It should be held straight up. The trick is to consciously maintain one’s ear lobes over ones shoulders. This gets the head in the right place. The result is the king of the world, monarch of all one surveys feeling.

The other thing which gives courage, strength, power is a simple  habit. The diaphragm is the flat muscle above the abdomen. This must always be maintained in the lowered position.

This muscle rises and falls as one breathes. It can be maintained raised or lowered while breathing. Keeping it raised results in weakness. In rapt attention, surprise, shock and in death it is in the raised position.

One can breathe deep and hard with the diaphragm in the raised or lowered position. Breathing with it raised results in physical and mental weakness. . Breathing with it kept lowered, results in strength – mental and physical.

The proof is in the pudding. If  you make this a habit, you can have the cake and eat it too.
